The

Waffle

Chair

The challenge of building a chair with three-dimensional curves evolved into the ultimate digital (and fabric) fabrication project.

Parametric Design

The design for the chair involved creating a form using subD modeling and using a Grasshopper script to generate the flat waffle pieces. The parametric grasshopper model allowed the design to be tested on a smaller scale before machining the final pieces.

The Final Cut Pieces

Producing the Chair

After a semester spent iterating and testing the design, I cut the final pieces out using CNC machining. The pieces were then assembled and glued together. The last step in the building process was designing and sewing a cushion to fit the form.

The Waffle Chair is to be featured in the upcoming IIT College of Architecture Open House Exhibit
